History

The company was founded in 1967 by a mechanical engineer working with a slide rule at a used wooden desk in rented office space. He wished to build a company with a professional, rewarding environment which would attract and retain competent employees for the long term. He believed that such a firm would also attract and retain customers with professionally challenging requirements. These concepts worked. The first customers continue to be served by the company today. The first employee to be hired, a young mechanical engineer who joined the founder in 1968, assumed the presidency of the company 26 years later (1994).  After 19 years of employment at CTI another engineer assumed the presidency in 2004.

From its beginning, Commonwealth Technology has been a hardware-oriented firm. This work has involved developing mechanical and electromechanical equipment, in later years expanding to include electronic equipment and systems. Primary customers to be served by the company were, and continue to be, Government agencies and laboratories in the Washington DC area.

Milestones in the company’s growth have been establishing an in-house machine shop (1970), establishing an in-house cabinet shop (1974) and acquiring an electrical engineering firm (1993). From its first days with a slide rule and wooden desk, the company’s resources have grown to include three modern, custom-designed facilities of 66,550 square feet housing fully equipped shops, laboratories, engineering facilities and office work areas.
